In 1955, Kenyan businessmen established the Tanganyika Meerschaum Corporation after meerschaum was discovered near the surface of Mount Kilimanjaro. Meerschaum from this region of East Africa was known for being tougher and less porous than Turkish meerschaum. Following the 1964 union of Tanganyika and Zanzibar to form Tanzania, the company soon closed—making surviving examples increasingly collectible.

Although over half a century old, this pipe remains unsmoked and in pristine, like-new condition. It includes its original box, which shows only minimal wear.
