Meerschaum Lined Kiko Bulldog African Wood Pipe - Classic bulldog style pipe with its diamond shaped shank and stem has a gorgeous wood grain. The dark rich color is accentuated by a polished high gloss finish. The pipe bowl is lined with genuine solid block Amboseli African meerschaum. A solid metal fitting is in the shank and attaches to diamond shaped slightly bent vulcanite stem. The Kiko elephant logo is stamped in white on the side of the slightly bent black stem. This is a handsome pipe.
Stamped "KIKO" with the model #109A on one side of the shank and "Made in Tanganyika" on the other, this is an authentic and rare one of a kind pipe from Africa.
Although the pipe is over a half century old it is unsmoked in excellent condition. The pipe comes with its original box which does show a bit of wear and tear. It also includes an original small booklet telling a history of meerschaum with a description and pictures of the different pipe styles.
In 1955 Kenyan businessmen from Nairobi established the Tanganyika Meerschaum Corporation after a meerschaum mine was discovered close to the surface on Mount Kilimanjaro. Another mine was soon discovered near Lake Amboseli. The meerschaum from this part of East Africa was known to be tougher, less porous and priced less than Turkish meerschaum. Tanganyika and Zanzibar merged and became known as Tanzania in October of 1964. The company closed soon after.

The pipe smokes very well and has only the slightest reminder of age in the taste -a characteristic that will quickly fade. It was a nice pipe when it was made and it still is, is the right hands. it is also a collector piece, being quite unusual in some respects. the fit of the stem is a bit annoying but a teflon washer should suffice to even it out.
