Mini African Wood Churchwarden Pipe - Although this is not a meerschaum pipe, it is an African wood pipe made by the same company, Tanganyika. The bowl is solid wood in a rusticated black matte finish with a hint of polish on the smooth rim. A solid metal fitting screws into the pipe bowl and attaches to a black vulcanite churchwarden straight stem.
Stamped "Tanganyika" on the underside of the churchwarden stem, this is an authentic and rare pipe from Africa.
In 1955 Kenyan businessmen from Nairobi established the Tanganyika Meerschaum Corporation after a meerschaum mine was discovered close to the surface on Mount Kilimanjaro. The meerschaum from this part of East Africa was known to be tougher, less porous and priced less than Turkish meerschaum. Tanganyika and Zanzibar merged and became known as Tanzania in October of 1964. The company closed soon after.
Although the pipe is over a half century old it is unsmoked in brand new pristine condition. The pipe comes in a protective black velvet drawstring pouch.
