Townsman Poker African Block Meerschaum Pipe

Townsman Poker African Block Meerschaum Pipe - Solid block meerschaum pipe is from Africa. It is model number 17 in the Townsman series and is carved with indentations in the shape of leaves all around the poker bowl. The pipe features unique coloring going from a very dark brown smooth rim to a gradual fade of a creamy yellow. The pipe is finished with a tapered Vulcanite straight stem.

The model number "17" and "Genuine Block Meerschaum" are both stamped on the bottom of the pipe bowl. Also stamped on the underside of the long stem is where it was made, "Tanganyika." This pipe is authentic and a rare one of a kind pipe from Africa. The Kiko elephant logo is also stamped in white on the side of the straight black stem. This model also has the name of Hillbilly Yellow. The pipe comes with a protective chamois drawstring pouch.

Although the pipe is over a half century old it is unsmoked in excellent condition. The pipe comes with its original box which has minimal wear and tear. It also includes an original small booklet telling the history of Amboseli meerschaum with a description and pictures of the different pipe styles.

In 1955 Kenyan businessmen from Nairobi established the Tanganyika Meerschaum Corporation after a meerschaum mine was discovered close to the surface on Mount Kilimanjaro. Another mine was soon discovered near Lake Amboseli. The meerschaum from this part of East Africa was known to be tougher, less porous and priced less than Turkish meerschaum. Tanganyika and Zanzibar merged and became known as Tanzania in October of 1964. The company closed soon after.
