Billiard Townsman Crater African Block Meerschaum Pipe
- Tanganyika African Meerschaum Pipes
Billiard Townsman Crater African Block Meerschaum Pipe - This genuine African solid block meerschaum pipe is number 343 in the K.T. Crater Townsman models. It is a tall billiard bowl pipe with a short saddle stem. The pipe is carved in a design of craters and inside each one are circular patterns similar to a hammered effect. This gives the pipe a rusticated look. The pipe is lightly polished and is pre-colored in a dark brown textured rim that fades into a pale creamy yellow color. The pipe is made of genuine Amboseli block meerschaum from Africa. A solid metal fitting in the shank attaches to the vulcanite stem. The Kiko elephant logo is stamped in white on the straight black polished saddle stem. The pipe comes with a protective chamois drawstring pouch.
Stamped "Genuine Block Meerschaum" with the model number 343 on the underside of the shank and "Tanganyika" on the stem, this is an authentic block Tanganyika meerschaum pipe from Africa.
Although the pipe is over a half century old it is unsmoked in excellent condition. The pipe comes with its original box which has minimal wear and tear. It also includes an original small booklet telling a history of Tanganyika meerschaum with a description and pictures of the different pipe styles.
In 1955 Kenyan businessmen from Nairobi established the Tanganyika Meerschaum Corporation after a meerschaum mine was discovered close to the surface on Mount Kilimanjaro. Another mine was soon discovered near Lake Amboseli. The meerschaum from this part of East Africa was known to be tougher, less porous and priced less than Turkish meerschaum. Tanganyika and Zanzibar merged and became known as Tanzania in October of 1964. The company closed soon after.
