Kiko Leather Wrap African Meerschaum Lined Pipe - A rare find from the early days of African meerschaum pipe production, this Vintage Kiko Leather Wrap African Meerschaum Lined Pipe features distinctive light brown peccary leather, a classic apple-shaped bowl, and a genuine African meerschaum lining. Believed to be more than 60 years old and never smoked, this collectible pipe preserves the craftsmanship and character of a bygone era.
The hand-stitched leather covers the rounded bowl and extends along the shank, creating a richly textured appearance. Inside, genuine African meerschaum is traditionally valued for its cool, dry smoking qualities. A metal connector joins the shank to a black vulcanite straight saddle stem, featuring the distinctive white Kilimanjaro rhinoceros emblem.
Original markings impressed into the leather identify the pipe. One side of the shank bears the Kiko name and model number 12, while the opposite side is stamped “Made in Tanganyika,” reflecting its East African manufacturing heritage.
The pipe includes its original Kiko presentation box, displaying the manufacturer's name, “Genuine Amboseli Meerschaum,” and the elephant trademark of the Tanganyika Meerschaum Corporation Limited. An original illustrated booklet describing meerschaum history and African pipe designs is also included. The box shows only minimal age-related wear.
Kiko's history dates to 1955, when the Tanganyika Meerschaum Corporation was established following the discovery of accessible meerschaum deposits near Mount Kilimanjaro. These African pipes became known for their distinctive materials and traditional craftsmanship. Although Tanganyika joined Zanzibar to form Tanzania in 1964, the historical country stamp alone does not establish the pipe's precise production date.
Remaining in excellent, unsmoked condition, this vintage Kiko pipe is an exceptional example of preserved African pipe craftsmanship.
With its hand-stitched peccary leather, original Tanganyika markings, Kilimanjaro rhinoceros stem emblem, and surviving factory packaging, this distinctive Kiko meerschaum-lined pipe offers historical character and collectible appeal.
