Kiko Rustic Straight African Wood Meerschaum-Lined Pipe - This vintage Kiko straight pipe features a rugged, rustic finish that highlights its bold, utilitarian character. The dark African wood bowl is deeply textured, offering a secure, tactile grip and a classic, workmanlike appearance. The bowl is lined with genuine meerschaum, providing the cool, dry, and neutral smoking qualities meerschaum is known for while adding durability to the chamber.

The elongated shank is fitted with a solid metal connector that joins a black vulcanite straight stem, adding length and balance to the pipe. As a mark of quality and authenticity, the stem is stamped with the iconic white Kilimanjaro rhinoceros logo—a subtle tribute to African craftsmanship and wildlife. Stamped on the underside of the shank are “KIKO,” “Made in Tanganyika,” and the model number 11, confirming this as an authentic and increasingly rare African meerschaum-lined pipe.

The pipe includes its original box, printed with the Kiko name on the lid and Genuine Amboseli Meerschaum on the side. The box shows minimal wear and bears the name Tanganyika Meerschaum Corporation Limited, along with the company’s elephant logo. Also included is the original booklet detailing the history of meerschaum, with descriptions and photographs of various African pipe styles.

In 1955, Kenyan businessmen from Nairobi established the Tanganyika Meerschaum Corporation after a meerschaum deposit was discovered near the surface of Mount Kilimanjaro. Meerschaum from this region of East Africa was known to be tougher, less porous, and more affordable than Turkish meerschaum. Following the merger of Tanganyika and Zanzibar into Tanzania in October 1964, the company closed soon thereafter.

Although this Kiko meerschaum-lined pipe is over half a century old, it remains unsmoked and in pristine, like-new condition.
