Kilimanjaro African Wood Meerschaum Lined Pipe

Kilimanjaro African Wood Meerschaum Lined Pipe - Designed with the character of a classic African-made pipe, this vintage Kilimanjaro meerschaum-lined pipe pairs a polished African hardwood exterior with a genuine African meerschaum chamber lining. The warm brown finish highlights the natural grain of the wood, while the meerschaum lining offers the cool, dry smoking qualities associated with this distinctive material.

A long, streamlined shank leads to a tapered black vulcanite stem joined by a durable metal fitting. The stem carries the recognizable white Kilimanjaro rhinoceros logo, while original factory markings add important collector interest. “4 Kilimanjaro” is stamped on one side of the shank and “Made in Tanganyika” appears on the opposite side.

The Tanganyika Meerschaum Corporation was established in 1955 following the discovery of East African meerschaum deposits in the Kilimanjaro region. The material became known for being harder and less porous than Turkish meerschaum, and the company produced a variety of distinctive African pipes using the mineral.

The “Made in Tanganyika” stamping adds particular historical appeal. Tanganyika united with Zanzibar in 1964 to form Tanzania, while the Tanganyika Meerschaum Corporation continued operating under its established name. Pipes retaining the Tanganyika marking remain interesting examples of East African pipe-making history.

More than half a century old, this example remains unsmoked and in pristine new-old-stock condition. Even more desirable from a collector’s standpoint, it retains its original box, showing only minimal age-related wear.

With its African hardwood bowl, genuine meerschaum lining, Kilimanjaro rhinoceros logo, original Tanganyika markings, unsmoked condition, and original box, this vintage pipe is a remarkably well-preserved piece of African pipe-making history.
