Vintage Meerschaum-Lined Bulldog Pipe Made in Tanganyika - This Kilimanjaro bulldog pipe features a distinctive African meerschaum-lined design, combining smooth elegance with functional craftsmanship. The bowl is finished in a silky high-gloss polish, displaying rich warm brown tones that highlight the natural grain and contrast beautifully against the white genuine Amboseli block meerschaum lining.
A solid metal fitting reinforces the shank, providing added durability while creating a secure transition to the black bent stem. The stem is accented with Kilimanjaro's signature white rhinoceros logo, a distinctive mark of authenticity and heritage. Stamped “Kilimanjaro 109F” on one side of the shank and “Made in Tanganyika” on the other, this genuine African pipe is a rare and collectible example of East African pipe-making history.
Crafted from genuine Amboseli block meerschaum, this pipe dates to the Tanganyika era and remains unsmoked despite being more than half a century old. It is preserved in excellent condition and includes its original box, which shows only minimal wear. The box is printed with the Kilimanjaro name on the lid and the Tanganyika Meerschaum Corporation name and rhinoceros logo on the side, further enhancing its historical appeal.
In 1955, businessmen from Nairobi established the Tanganyika Meerschaum Corporation after a meerschaum deposit was discovered near the surface on the slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro. A second deposit was later found near Lake Amboseli. Meerschaum from this region of East Africa was known for being denser and less porous than Turkish meerschaum, making it a distinctive alternative in the pipe-making world. Following the union of Tanganyika and Zanzibar to form Tanzania in 1964, the company ceased operations shortly thereafter.
Combining historical significance, exceptional preservation, and genuine African meerschaum, this Kilimanjaro bulldog pipe is a remarkable collectible and a rare opportunity to own a piece of East African pipe-making history.
